I am walking in the Skechers Pier to Pier Friendship Walk to help make a difference.
I walk with love for my family, my friends, and myself.
Respect and inclusivity mean everything to me. The way we treat one another shapes the world we live in. Every act of kindness matters. Every moment of care can change a life.
I have ADHD and for most of my life I felt different and out of place. I was well-behaved, and eager to please. Instead of being offered the help I truly needed, I was placed in a gifted and talented program. I was given many chances to succeed academically, and I did for a long time, until everything became too heavy to carry. As a young adult, I struggled deeply.
As a child, people saw me as passionate. I always had a cause, something I wanted to bring awareness to. Inside, I was the one who needed awareness the most. I didn?t have the words to explain that I was struggling. I did not know how to tell anyone that I was living in pain.
I learned to hide the parts of myself that didn?t seem to fit. I masked what felt too loud or too strange. I tried to act in ways that felt appropriate so others would like me. I did make real, lasting friendships, and I hold those close to my heart. Still, it was hard to always feel like I was performing to belong. No child should have to work that hard just to feel accepted.
If I had been understood and supported, my life might have felt lighter. I want every child to grow up feeling safe, seen, and free to be who they are. Every child deserves that kind of understanding and love.
I have to admit that my life is not perfect today. It is better. So much better than it was growing up. I still have my struggles, and the people who know me best know this. I am grateful for their patience, their kindness, and their grace. I know I am ABSOLUTELY always late. I am sorry for that.
I will never be late in reminding you that you are worthy. You are worthy of love, of understanding, and of compassion no matter who you are or what your struggle is.
In my heart, you are free. Free to be who you are, and whoever you need to be.
I am walking to support education and children with special needs. This cause means everything to me. If my story touches your heart, I invite you to be part of this. You can donate, walk beside me, or share this message so more children can get the help they deserve.
With love,
Nancy California
